This bike has been SOLD!
1998 Model (I purchased it new at the end of 1998)
This bike has always been meticulously maintained and is used solely for recreational trail riding (never raced). I am only selling it out of boredom... it works perfect and does everything I ask of it... I just feel the need to get something new.
It includes the BAJA DESIGNS street legal kit, as well as all original headlight and taillight assembly.
Some maintenance items that have been performed are:
The bike has a heavy duty skid plate and Acerbis hand guards.
It is currently geared one tooth lower in the front and 2 bigger in the rear - you also get the stock sprockets.
It also comes with a second air filter so you can always have a clean one on hand.
Some comments.
This bike is awesome for anyone 5 feet 7 inches or taller, with weight up to 250lbs. It is very easy to ride and will serve both beginner and advanced riders. It has HUGE amounts of torque (especially with the lowered gearing) which means never having to ride the clutch, regardless of how gnarly or tough the terrain.
It is important to note that this is NOT a good bike for Moto-Cross type terrain (big whoops and jumps), but if the majority of your riding is single-track or play riding, it is PERFECT. It will gladly do the usual 2 to 4 foot jumps you encounter when trail riding... just not the big tabletops and doubles that are on a motocross track.
The bike is located in Springfield, MA but I can help with delivery, if needed. Also, if you wish to arrange a time for a test ride, that is fine also.
And finally, I am willing to spend time with the new owner showing them how to perform all the regular maintenance items (oil and filter changes, air filter, valve adjustments, etc)
Please note that the price is FIRM, but very well worth it. If you want a "beater" type bike, then look elsewhere. This bike is ideal for someone that wants the feel of a new bike, but without the cost.
It needs absolutely nothing and starts right up first or second kick. It feels just like a new bike would feel... everything operates smoothly, nothing is broken or squeaking... it is a very TIGHT bike.
Some other stuff found on the net about the 1998 XR400:
New for '98 on the big XR is revised carb jetting, ignition timing and intake/exhaust systems, along with a redesigned airbox that combined are claimed to improve engine performance, especially at higher altitudes. A less restrictive muffler with new three-chamber design should also help increase power, according to Honda spokesmen.
New fork spring rates and redesigned compression damping valves coupled with all-new Pro-Link linkage needle-bearings should provide smoother, more compliant suspension action. Other improvements found on the '98 XR400 include a CR-bend handlebar for increased rider comfort, a more durable right footpeg bracket and a stronger rear subframe.
NOTE: This is what the bike looks like stock. My bike no longer has
the gas tank sticker (knee braces wore it off), and the headlight and taillight
assemblies were exchanged for street legal parts. The photo above is
