DSL - DEMARC Information

DEMARC is the telephone company term for where their facilities or wires end, and where yours begin. When ordering a SAMnet DSL connection, your local telephone company (for example, Verizon, SBC / SNET, etc.) will install a new pair of wire for the DSL connection to the DEMARC for your residence or business.

The photo at the right shows one type of residential DEMARC as indicated by the red circle. This DEMARC is mounted on the outside of the house aside an electric service meter. Wires from the DEMARC box would typically run overhead or underground (depending on your area) back to the telephone company offices. Although in some cases, residential DEMARC's are inside (typically in the cellar) the approach today is usually the box is mounted outside. This allows the phone company to test and work on your line without having to gain access to your residence.

The DEMARC point for business lines becomes more complex, and depends greatly on the type of facility you are in. Most often the DEMARC is the point where the phone company cable enters a building - usually in large black cables containing 25, 100 or more telephone lines. These cables usually terminate in jacks or punch down blocks - the point of demarcation between your wires and the phone company's.

Whether business or residential, your DSL service must be extended from the DEMARC to where you would like the DSL service to be utilized. In a residential environment, that may be in your den or home based office.

Business situations vary, depending on desired usage. If your business DSL service will be utilized by just one computer, the DEMARC extension must be to that location. Where your business DSL line will be shared by network users, typically the DEMARC extension would be to where your network equipment (Ethernet hub/switch) is located.

In ordering your SAMnet DSL connection we will include, by default, a fee for the DEMARC extension, with the work done by our DSL installer. If you plan on extending the DEMARC yourself or if you have special needs, please let us know at time of ordering.

Note: the DEMARC extension must be accomplished prior to being able to perform the final installation testing of your new DSL service.
