There are several factors to connection speed. 1. Distance from the Bell Atlantic central office for the town you are calling from. Over 3 Miles and your speed will start nose diving. 2. Line conditions. Static and/or audible popping on the line will greatly reduce speed. If you can hear it on your phone it's time to call Bell for phone service. 3. Modem Quality. While there a good modems out there at inexpensive prices there are also horrible modems that seem like a bargain. LT Win Modems used to be a quality control nightmare. Some brands still are. Current software is many times the key to their success. (below) 4. Current Drivers. Make sure you have the most current driver/software for your modem by visiting the manufacturers web site. This is particularly true for software based modems like the LT Win Modem. We are running the most current v.90 56k software available on our end. 5. Other phone devices on the same circuit. Many answering machines and telephones reduce available line voltage and/or introduce line noise. If you are using the same line for your modem as for your voice calls try unplugging other devices an then test your connection again.
